On Sunday evening, the Rio Grande do Norte state championship second round got underway with Alecrim handed a tough trip to the state’s second city, Mossoro, to take on last year’s champions Potiguar.
After a difficult start to the tournament, which saw the team narrowly qualify from the first round, Alecrim regrouped and produced their best performance of the season to upset the odds and gain their first victory of 2014.
The match started with the favourites taking the lead after 17 minutes. However, just a minute later Alecrim responded with an equaliser from striker Felipe Moreira. Moreira then struck again on the stroke of half time to give Alecrim the lead. In the second half, the team had an excellent display from goalkeeper Danilo to thank for giving them the three points.
Alecrim will now welcome Corintians of Caico to Natal for their next game tomorrow (Wednesday) evening as they look to be one of four sides to progress from an eight-team round robin to the semi-finals.
